Over the next few months, the IT Department will be upgrading all City computers to the latest Microsoft Windows 10 operating system and the latest version of Microsoft Office 2016 software suite.
These upgrades are required for the City to stay current with the latest functionality and mitigate against potential vulnerabilities and security threats. This project is a major undertaking and will require IT-Technicians to perform hands-on upgrades on hundreds of City computers.
We understand that timing of this upgrade will be important for many City employees who are working on key projects and initiatives (such as ERP-Oracle and AMI-Itron). IT has developed a flexible and phased approach to deliver this upgrade with the least possible impact to our staff and business process. As needed, we will work with City staff individually to identify the best time for the upgrade.
Upgrade approach:
* Approximately 1550 PCs will be upgraded using a phase deployment starting June 2019 through February 2020.
* Upgrades groups will be made up of employees from across various departments to minimize impact to a department.
* Employees schedule for PC replacements in FY2019/20 will come default with Windows10+Office2016 installed as part of the replacement project.
* Upgrading existing PCs to the latest Windows 10 from Windows 7 or some older versions of Windows 10 will require physical touch.
* Upgrading existing PCs to the latest Windows 10 from newer versions of Windows 10 can be pushed remotely without interruption to the employee.
* IT will take this opportunity to implement hard drive encryption and Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology on all laptop devices to protect access to data if lost.
